Math

Picture
General Information
To best serve the needs of your child we have made a few necessary changes to our Everyday Math program.  Your student will no longer have math boxes as homework, therefore they should not have to be taking their math journals home.   They will now have Study Links homework every night because class time will not be given.  They will only have one page a night and it needs to be brought back to class the next day.  Study Links should not take you any longer then 15 minutes.  If you and your child find that you are struggling with the concept please do not stress over this, write us a note saying you attempted it and we will help them with it.  Please ensure that they finish the practice part on the bottom of the page and SHOW THEIR WORK on the back because this is what we will grade.  Tests will be worth 2/3 of their grade so please help them and encourage them to study using the provided study guide.  If you sign the study guide and send it back to class with your student an extra point will be added to their test score.

Current Unit
We are currently working on Unit 4 Division in our math class.  Our unit 3 test was given on October 25th and I was very pleased with the test score.  We did not meet our 5th grade goal but we will set another one for unit 4.
*Just a reminder: tests are weighted differently now so it is important that they take it seriously and prepare properly.

Science

General Information
In Sciences students will be participating in several hands on activities.  At the end of each quarter the students will each be responsible to complete a big project.  While homework in science is a rare occasion sometimes students will need to take certain things home to finish.

Current Unit
We are learning about forces and motion.  Students did an experiment to find out if the mass of an object changes the rate at which the object falls.

Social Studies

General Information
In S.S., we do units based on different regions of the world.  We use the 5 Themes of Geography to teach every unit.
An easy way to remember the 5 themes is to think of MR. HELP.  (1. Movement  2. Region 3. Human-Environment Interaction 4. Location 5. Place) Most units will be 12 days.  The United States unit is a 50 day unit because we feel it is important for students to know a lot about the country in which they live.

Current unit
Canada
-Students will complete a book about Canada.  We will fill out a fact sheet over each province/territory in Canada.
